WHY THIS FILM MATTERS
Annie Wright's story flips the script—rock history through the eyes of the woman managing the chaos, fighting for overlooked artists, and carving her own path in an industry designed to exclude her. This is Almost Famous told by the publicist, not the fan. Bohemian Rhapsody from backstage, not the stage.
The Story:
50 years alongside legends: ABBA, John Denver, Mick Jagger, David Bowie, Lou Reed, George Thorogood
Her real passion: Championing overlooked Australian female artists like Renee Geyer
The cost: Decades battling sexism, health toll from constant proving herself, personal sacrifices
Never-before-seen diaries, photographs, and backstage footage
What Makes This Unmissable:
The untold perspective – What happened when the lights went down
The human cost – Sexism, health battles, personal sacrifices
Contemporary voices – Marcia Hines, Kate Ceberano connecting past to present
Potential series expansion – Feature doc as foundation for deeper dive
Her diaries capture five decades of triumphs, disasters, and the real cost of breaking barriers. Time to share them.
WHO IS BACKING THIS?
Industry leaders, artists, and supporters share why Annie's story matters.
George Thorogood • Brian Cadd • Glenn A. Baker AM • Michael Chugg • Kate Ceberano • Marcia Hines • Russell Morris • Greta Scacchi • Richard Wilkins • Vika & Linda Bull • Little Pattie • Leo Sayer • Dina Lee • Kevin Borich
And dozens more. These weren't just clients—many became lifelong friends.
Now it's time to tell the story of the woman they trusted.
For over 40 years, Annie Wright worked behind the scenes with legends like David Bowie, Lou Reed, ABBA, Renee Geyer, and Annie Lennox.
She never thought her story mattered. She was wrong.
The window is closing. We have streaming platforms watching and major artists ready to participate. But without completing this next phase of filming in the coming months, we risk losing our opportunity to lock in the distribution deal.
This is the critical first stage that determines whether this project moves forward—and whether one of Australia's most influential publicists finally tells her story.
Annie Wright is a name you've never heard. Unless you worked in the music industry.
She broke ABBA in Australia. Handled tours for David Bowie and Lou Reed. Opened Mushroom Records' US operations in Hollywood. Worked on over 30 films with directors like Francis Coppola and George Lucas, with actors like Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro.
"She Does Difficult" is what the film studios called her—a woman who could handle the most challenging personalities in entertainment.
But this documentary reveals the price of that success:
Navigating a male-dominated industry as one of Australia's first female music executives
Sacrificing personal relationships for an all-consuming career
Finding love, losing it, and finding it again 40 years later
Battling breast cancer while continuing to champion artists
Searching for her own voice after amplifying others for decades
This is a story of resilience, sacrifice, and the moments that shaped music history—told by someone who was always in the room but never in the spotlight.
For decades, Annie was the woman the legends trusted. The one who could handle the difficult personalities. The one who got things done.
Now it's time to hear her story.
The funding we raise now goes directly toward:
🎬
Stream or download
📼
Licensing and restoring rare footage from the 1970s-1990s that brings this era to life
✨
Creating visual sequences that transport viewers into key moments from Annie's journey through music history
Producing a compelling highlight reel for streaming platform presentations—this is what gets us over the line
Additional funding supports post-production, sound design, color grading, and music licensing.
Every dollar raised goes directly into production costs. We're running lean to make every contribution count.
This is about what we lose when we only celebrate the names in lights.
For every legend you know, there are dozens of people who made it possible. The publicists, the managers, the people who fought battles, built careers, and shaped culture—all while remaining invisible.
Annie Wright is one of those people. And her story matters because:
She was there when ABBA conquered Australia
She was in the room when Lou Reed and David Bowie shaped their public personas
She opened doors for Australian music in Hollywood
She fought environmental battles and won
She survived and thrived in an industry that tried to silence women
She kept going when everything fell apart
Most importantly: Her story is still unfolding. And we have a small window to capture it while the artists who knew her, worked with her, and respected her are ready to talk.
If we don't film now, we lose this moment forever.
If we don't film now, we lose this moment forever.
